FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM

FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM

AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program, which has been sponsored by Coastline for more than 40 years, is part of the AmeriCorps Seniors network of programs. AmeriCorps is the federal agency for volunteering, service, and civic engagement. The program engages millions of Americans in citizen service through its volunteer-driven programs.

The program offers volunteers, 55 years and older, and who meet income and criminal history eligibility requirements, the opportunity to assist in a classroom with children enrolled in educational programs, such as elementary schools, preschools, head starts, and other youth-based organizations. The students and teachers both benefit from the wisdom and experience of the Foster Grandparent volunteer as they work one-on-one and in small groups with children, focusing on literacy and academics, communication, and social skills which are needed to help a child succeed. This program provides a way for volunteers to stay active by serving children in their communities.

The Foster Grandparents volunteer a minimum of 15 hours each week. Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a small tax-free stipend* for their time and commitment, while benefiting from the impact they make in a child’s life on a daily basis.
