Staying Healthy this Flu Season




Influenza – (also known as the flu), is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses.  It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Symptoms (can have some or all of them):
–  Flu usually comes on suddenly
–  Fever/Chills
–  Cough
–  Sore Throat
–  Runny Nose
–  Muscle/Body aches
–  Headache
–  Fatigue
–  Possible vomiting and/or diarrhea

Most people who get the flu recover in a few days to 2 weeks.  Some people may develop complications (such as pneumonia, bronchitis and other infections).

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first important step in protecting against this illness.

Also take everyday preventative measures:
–   Stay away for sick people
–   Wash your hands frequently to reduce spread of germs
–   If you get sick, stay home to prevent spread of the flu

If you get sick, antiviral drugs can be prescribed by your MD if needed.

High risk people (children younger than 2 years, adults over 65, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions) and people very sick with the flu, may need to call their medical professional for prompt treatment.
